A Review By Téah Willoughby & Nickie Willoughby
Dubai Opera is truly a stunning venue. The iconic and contemporary performing arts venue is located in the heart of Downtown Dubai, United Arab Emirates parallel to both The Dubai Mall as well as the Burj Khalifa. Opened in 2016 , the venue seats 2,000 people and is used as a multi-format theatre that can be converted for performances, concerts, theatre productions, conferences, weddings, and cultural venues. Designed by Janus Rostock of Atkins, the striking architectural masterpiece that is the Dubai Opera house is designed in the shape of a traditional dhow captivating the culture and essence of the traditional Middle East. Inside the venue, the Dubai Opera has a licensed bar on both the first floor and ground floor, serving beverages, dry snacks, and hot food at average prices for Downtown Dubai.
Matilda the musical’ by the Royal Shakespeare company, which was approximately 2 hours 35
minutes long, was phenomenal. Inspired by the author Roald Dahl, scripting by Dennis Kelly, music and lyrics by Tim Minchin , the stage show tells the story of a precocious young girl ‘Matilda’.
Unfortunately, her parents ‘The Wormwood’s’ are neglectful and dismissive of her talents, sending
her off to a dismal school run by the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull. Matilda's only solace is found in books and her kind-hearted teacher, Miss Honey. With witty humour, remarkable
choreography and catchy songs, the presentation of the musical score, storyline and intricate set
design is simply fantastic. My personal favourites are:
‘Revolting Children’- Just Wow! Unbelievable vocals from an unbelievably powerful and talented
ensemble, vivid choreography of which captivated the audience. I will be singing this song in my head for weeks. Loved it.
‘Quiet’- Such a beautiful performance, delivered with perfect emotion. Make sure you take your
tissues! Exceptional!
‘My house’- A stunning soft ballad and a very poignant moment in the story line.
‘When I grow up’- Another fantastic number delivered by the talented cast, I particularly liked the
use of the swings, a simple idea yet so fitting for the piece. Stunning solo part from Miss Honey,
followed by the incredible Matilda.
I have to mention the number ‘Loud’ performed by the characters of both Mrs Wormwood and
Rudolpho. The charisma and energy of the performance was breathtaking.
The collective passion, artistry and charisma portrayed from all the actors and actresses in the Royal
Shakespeare company’s interpretation of ‘Matilda’ transcended our expectations. Possessing
exceptional singing, acting, and dancing abilities.
They brought the central and background characters to life, captivating the audience with their charm and emotional depth making the musical an unforgettable experience that resonated with me and my daughter long after the final curtain call. Highly recommended. Book those tickets today!
